Inuits were among the first people to use a form of sunglasses which was an ivory ( no doubt whalebone) figure eight shaped piece. This had a narrow slit and blocked much of the bright sun rays but offered no further protection.

It was the 1920’s when an American created the first line of mass produced sunglasses, it was not until 1936 that the first pairs of polarized sunglasses were made available. Jump to the 1940’s and look on any film of beach life you will notice that the general public and of course movie stars of the time were not seen with sunglasses.

Finally one thing you all should know is that regardless of summer or winter sun if we start to wear tinted glasses or sunglasses from a young age we can prevent damage and early ageing of the eyes.
